2017 (5TH YEAR)

MICROBREWERIES

Festival beer

VLTAVSKÉ OUŠKO

As in recent years, this year we can again look forward to a special batch of festival beer. Family brewery Krušnohor from Kraslice in Sokolovsko, which scored 2 nd place in last year’s 4 th year of the festival, has taken on the responsibility of making this year’s brew. Light, 10% draft beer will be available, yet again carrying a name of one type of swimming style. Compared to the traditional Kraslice’s 10% beer, it mainly differentiates itself in higher bitterness, lower level of fermentation and the use of cold hop. Impressive 500 litres will be available, most of which on tap but a few dozens of litres also in glass bottles.

Original Gravity: 10° Plato, ABV: 3.9 %, Bitterness: 40 IBU

Content: water, barley malt (Pilsner and CaraPils), modified hops (Žatec early ripening amber, Sládek, Premiant and Harmonie).

Brewer: Vojtěch Slivoň

  • BEER COASTER (offered as part of two festival set types, as well as individually at 15 CZK/piece)

  • 0.3 LITER GLASS MUG (approximately 600 pieces offered only as part of festival set; not sold individually)

On Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 the program will also include the BEER FLEA MARKET, where members of the Club of Collectors of Beer Souvenirs Prague and others will have a large number of their beer souvenirs on display. More information can be found here.

BEER AT NÁPLAVKA 2016

Year: IV.

Date: 17 – 18 June 2016

Location: Náplavka at Rašínovo nábřeží, between Palackého and the railway bridge, Prague 2

Organizer: NGO Archetyp

Goals:

Aims: The aim of the festival was, as in previous years, to introduce to the widest audience possible not only the beer production of small Czech breweries and pointing out the different taste of their beer as compared to the beer of large common production, but also to provide those interested with the opportunity to meet directly with the owners and brew masters. Besides that, the organizers attempted to introduce to Prague’s inhabitants the newly established microbreweries, both from Prague and its surrounding areas and from the various regions of the Czech Republic. Through providing large variety of refreshments, including non-alcoholic drinks the attendance of the event was made suitable for whole families with children.

Participants: 45 small, micro and mobile breweries and more than 100 kinds of beer specialities. The consumption of presented beer caused strong craving for food which was satisfied through thirty food facilities and their offered delicacies, from crackling, baguettes, burgers to Czech classics, home-made lemonade and coffee.

Festival beer: As in previous years the festival had its own batch of beer brewed by the winner of the visitors’ vote regarding the favourite brewery of the year and named after a type of swimming stroke. This time it was a light 12% beer named “Vltava’s front crawl”. The beer was brewed at Sedlčany brewery Krčín in the amount of 500 litres.

Conclusion: Conclusion: High participation rate of 45 breweries stemming from the success of previous years of the festival, it being the event at Parukářka in 2012 or Vltava’s Náplavka in the years of 2013 to 2015. The festival has established its good reputation and prestige which resulted in high interest in participation of new breweries. The success of the tasting festival and its concept is also underlined by the fact that before the festival even happened, many beer events had already taken place during the month of June. Those however differ in style and the amount of financial support of the co-organizers. The festival “Beer at Náplavka” does not aim to compare itself in its focus to other festivals organized the same year in Prague. Its focus on microbreweries and drinking beer from glasses or pitchers (0.3 l) is a distinctive feature from some of them, as well as its concern to offer something extra (exchange, autograph sessions, exhibitions). The festival also differentiate itself by giving space to collectors of beer souvenirs, by serving draft beer in limited amounts made specifically for the event and by offering varied cuisine. The presence of the owners and brew masters from the microbreweries is also significant.

Results:

  • Turnout – 15 000 visitors in two days (estimate only)
  • Results of the voting on the “Favorite brewery of the festival” - 1. Kocour Varnsdorf, 2. Krušnohor Kraslice, 3. Valášek Vsetín.

BEER AT NÁPLAVKA 2015

Year: III.

Date: 19 – 20 June 2015

Location: Náplavka at Rašínovo nábřeží, between Palackého and the railway bridge, Prague 2

Organizer: NGO Archetyp

Goals:

As in previous years, the aim of the festival was to introduce beer from small breweries and microbreweries to the widest audience possible. The goal was to point out strong distinctions in the flavor of beer from such production as compared to large breweries and to create an opportunity for direct meeting with the brew masters and owners. Besides that, the organizers also attempted to introduce the newly established microbreweries to Prague’s residents, namely in Prague itself and in the Central Bohemian Region. To make a tradition out of any event means not only organizing it regularly but also periodically holding it during the same dates and at the same location. This was unfortunately not accomplished this year in terms of the place as the usual dates at the end of May (29.-30.5.) were assigned by the Municipal Authority of Prague to another event. Festival Beer at Náplavka 2015 therefore took place not until the end of the 25 th week of the year.

Participants: 58 small Czech and Moravian breweries and microbreweries offered more than 150 kinds of beer and in some cases, also home-made lemonades. Quality cuisine included not only Czech delicacies but also foreign specialties well- matched with beer.

Festival beer: PAs in previous years a batch of festival beer was prepared for the visitors, namely 250 litres of non-filtered, non-pasteurized 11% light lager “Vltava’s breaststroke”, its name inspired by a type of swimming stroke. The beer was brewed by Slepý krtek from Ujkovice, favorite brewery from the previous year of the festival. This and other kinds of beer inspired craving for food which was satisfied through about thirty different facilities and their offered specialties, from crackling to baguettes and burgers to Czech delicacies.

Program: Performance of several bands throughout the two days, farmer’s market on Saturday and presentation of various beer souvenirs in the form of flea market.

Results:

  • Turnout – 15 000 visitors in two days (estimate only)
  • Results of the voting on the “Favorite brewery of the festival” - 1. Sedlčanský pivovar Krčín Sedlčany, 2. Kolčavka Praha, 3. Starokladno.

BEER AT NÁPLAVKA 2014

Year: II.

Date: 30 – 31 May 2014

Location: náplavka Rašínova nábřeží, between Palacký most and the railway bridge, Prague 2

Organizer: Archetyp, registered association

Goals:

  • Bring together the widest range of interested parties with a variety of small Bohemian and Moravian breweries and microbreweries – distinct from the oftentimes mass produced multinational giants – while also offering direct interactions with the owners and brewers.
  • Emphasize responsible beer consumption and a high cultural standard of tasting exclusively from 0.3-liter glass mugs.
  • Attempt to combine good beer with top-rate artisanal food suited for an environment with discerning, unobtrusive musical selections.
  • Provide a space for collectors of beer souvenirs to present their praiseworthy efforts in preserving a portion of our rich brewing history for future generations.

Participants: 43 small Bohemian and Moravian breweries and microbreweries that offered more than 140 kinds of beer and in some cases their own lemonades. Quality cuisine comprised of not only Czech gastronomy but also specialties from abroad served as an accompaniment to the beer.

Festival beer: Plzeňský Pašák brewery, voted the favorite brewery by visitors at the first festival, made 300 liters of 12% Vltavský motýlek beer for this event, of which 200 liters were bottled and the remaining 100 were kegged. Proceeds from the sale of the kegged beer were subsequently donated to the nonprofit organization Ztracené dítě o. s. (Lost Children), which provides help via telephone to children and adults in crisis situations.

Program: Various bands performed over the course of two days and on Saturday there was a farmers market and presentation of all kinds of beer souvenirs at a flea market.

Results:

  • Attendance – despite uncertainty caused by the threat of floods early on the first day, this event attracted 15,000 visitors (estimate) over the course of two days.
  • The favorite breweries of the festival, as determined by visitor ballot – 1. Slepý krtek Ujkovice, 2. Pivovarský dvůr Zvíkov, 3. U Stočesů Rokycany.
  • Nonprofit organization Ztracené dítě o. s. was presented with a contribution of over 11,500 Kč.

BEER AT NÁPLAVKA 2013

Year: I.

Date: 4 – 5 October 2013

Location: náplavka Rašínova nábřeží, between Palacký most and the railway bridge, Prague 2

Organizer: Archetyp, registered association

Cíle:

Participants: 29 small Bohemian and Moravian breweries and microbreweries that offered more than 90 kinds of beer and in some cases their own lemonades. Quality cuisine comprised of not only Czech gastronomy but also specialties from abroad served as an accompaniment to the beer.

Festival beer: Brewery Plzeňský Pašák, which was voted the favorite brewery by attendees, produced for this event 200 liters of 13% beer Vltavský plavec, which was bottled.

Program: Various bands performed over the course of two days. On Friday there was a demonstration on the production of beer using medieval methods, on Saturday there was a farmers market, and later we had a flea market with all manner of beer souvenirs.

Results:

  • Attendance – While during the original dates, 31/5 – 1/6/2013, the weather brought flooding and the cancellation of the festival, on this wonderful fall weekend of 4-5/10/13 we enjoyed, in the true sense of the word, an Indian summer at the riverfront. Thanks to this, our event, specially named “Reloaded,” attracted over 15,000 visitors (estimate).
  • The favorite breweries of the festival, as determined by visitor ballot – 1. Plzeňský Pašák, 2. Pivovarský dvůr Zvíkov, 3. U Stočesů Rokycany
